Things I'm Still Figuring Out as an Artist

What It’s Really Like Being an Artist (Behind the Scenes)

Hey, hello there, friend!

People often assume that you've got it all figured out once you become a professional artist. The routines. The confidence. The rhythm. The balance. But here's my truth: I'm still figuring it out. All of it. Constantly. This journey is messy, beautiful, cyclical, and humbling. Maybe by sharing some of what I'm still learning, you'll feel a little more at ease with your own process—whatever that may be.

I'm still figuring out my creative rhythm

People think I paint every day—but the truth is, I don't. I struggle to make consistent time to sit down, paint, and experiment. Over time, I've realized I work in seasons.

Because I wear many hats—writing, marketing, managing projects—my time in the studio often comes in waves. It's go-time when I'm preparing for a solo show or new series. But in between those waves? It's quieter.

I'm still figuring out how often I want to launch new collections, on online workshops. I want to keep my art exclusive, intentional, and aligned with meaning—not mass-produced. So I take my time, and I trust that flow.

I'm still learning how to manage self-doubt

Self-doubt creeps in, especially during big or unfamiliar projects. And when it does, so does resistance… and procrastination. I've learned to coach myself through pep talks, self-hypnosis, meditation, and journaling. It's all about building that trust muscle and supporting my nervous system so I can keep showing up.

I still feel unsure—until the excitement hits

The funny thing is, once an idea really clicks—when I feel that spark—I'm all in. Fired up. Inspired. But it can take time to get there, especially when I have a million ideas floating around. I'm learning to follow the one that feels most exciting at the moment. That's usually the one with the most energy behind it.

I'm still learning how to grow my art business

Marketing is a forever-evolving journey. I'm always learning how to better share my work and expand into new platforms. I've been thinking about getting help so I can show up more consistently across different spaces.

I still write my way through slow seasons

When things slow down—emotionally or financially—writing is what helps me most, also planning new income ideas. This blog and my weekly emails keep me grounded. They remind me that showing up and using my voice is part of my purpose. Even when I'm not painting, I can serve and stay connected to you through my words.

I'm unlearning what success should look like

One of the biggest lessons I'm embracing is that no one sees success the same way. You can't compare your path to someone else's. Sure, you can feel inspired by others, but you have to know yourself in the end. What works for you? What feels true for your life and values? Even if you have a clear vision, the path might shift. And when it does, it's not failure—it's evolution.

I'm still working on protecting my studio time

I've built consistent routines in many areas of my life—my mornings, my marketing, my health habits, my food. But my studio time? That's the one I'm still nurturing. My goal is to create something four times a week—not necessarily for sale, but just to keep that creative energy alive.

I wish more people knew how much vulnerability it takes

Artists are human. We all have doubts, indecision, and vulnerable moments. Some of us hide those by not showing up. Others show up but don't share the messy parts.

I believe this deeply: Our art is not here to support us. We are here to support our art.

I don't compare myself. I expand from what inspires me

These days, when I see someone doing something amazing, I don't feel small—I feel expanded. If they can do it, it means it's possible for me, too.

I stay grounded by remembering this...

Success is inevitable. And we will always be figuring things out. Because every time we reach a new level, another one is waiting. And that's not something to fear—that's the most exciting thing to live for. The path is always unfolding. And the magic is in the unfolding.

I would love to know which one resonates with you the most! Please, share in the comments!
